The Bills Get Their Chan….

From fired coordinator to head coach in just 5 months of being unemployed. Thanks Monster.com!

For reasons that are unclear to me, I have found myself strangely intrigued by the Buffalo Bills coaching search.  It had all the makings of a monumental trainwreck and it did not disappoint.  From the early pipe dreams of Mike Shanahan and Bill Cowher, to the Perry Fewell “interview”, to Brian Schottenheimer’s “hell no”, right up until they passed on the hottest assistant in the game, Leslie Frazier,  for a coaching washout in Chan Gailey, the Bills have really displayed how a front office ought not to be run.  They are the only front office having a worse offseason than the Chicago Bears.  As a Bear fan I’m in awe.

For those of you who lost track of Chan Gailey, this is what he was up to last season…..nothing.  He was fired by the Chiefs two weeks before the season began.  His one season stint in Kansas City came after six undistinguished years as Head Coach at Georgia Tech where he went to six bowl games but never won the ACC, never went to a BCS game, never won more than nine games and never finished the season in the Top 25.  As Head Coach of the Cowboys for two seasons he posted an 18-14 record with two playoff seasons but was unable to win a playoff game as the Dallas dynasty officially died out.

To sum up, he’s been a well respected coordinator and an extremely average head coach.  His resume’ is eerily similar to…wait for it….DICK JAURON, except he specializes in offense.  For Bills fans who suffered through three straight 7-9 seasons with Deadwood Dick, this can’t be a comforting thought.  At the very least the Bills will draft a QB with a high pick in the first round, something a Jauron led team is loathe to do.  Prepare yourselves for the Jimmy Claussen era, Bills fans.  It will be here in April.

If you were one of the disgusted Bills fans who contributed money to the Bill Cowher billboard, this hire has to be monumentally disappointing.  If you think the Bills are a hilarious mess and are perversely enjoying their slide into oblivion, this move is more mildly entertaining theater.  Toronto, here they come.
